Women's Players Club

We’ve searched the online poker gaming community far and wide to discover the wonderfully varied poker players who share their expertise with us.

Men and women are different in their approach to poker. Broadly speaking, women prefer to observe the psychology of each player they are at the table with and are very canny in using their observant talents to win this game.

“In general, an aggressive style is more effective at the poker table than a passive one. Aggressive style means playing your hands strongly by betting and raising. A passive style means you do more checking and calling,” writes Kathy Liebert in an article which emphasizes the benefits of observing your opponent.

Once you make the differentiation between a passive and aggressive player, you have a very powerful tool in your hands, because you can, by and large, begin to understand the kind of hands each player is holding. Liebert goes on to add that there are different styles among aggressive players.

“Some aggressive opponents play many hands and bet and raise with very weak cards… Many good poker players use a style referred to as selectively aggressive…this means that you generally play above average starting hands but play them strongly,” she says.

Another famous woman poker player who has written extensively on the subject, Debbie Burkhead, says that the outcome of poker is not based on strength, height, weight or speed. What is important is “knowledge of the game, concentration, patience, timing, money management, attitude and discipline. Her advice is to study the game, and never be intimidated:

“When you give the impression of being easily intimidated your opponents will try to take advantage of you. Once you prove you cannot be intimidated or bullied, they will back off and give you respect. I can think of no better way to gain respect in a poker game than playing the best game possible,” she says.

If you’re a woman poker player, post your message to other players in Poker Player Club’s Message Boards to help them learn from your experience.

Men's Players Club

Puggy Pearson’s Pug Nose earned him his nickname.

Walter Clyde, aka Puggy Pearson, was the second living person inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, and like many poker legends, is widely considered to be a character.

Originally from a poverty-stricken background, Puggy Pearson played in the highest stakes poker games in Las Vegas for over 25 years, becoming known as a player whose ability to think on his feet and willingness to take risks was unparalleled.

According to writer Mike Sexton, Puggy Pearson always said ""Deal me in" for the highest game in the room as soon as he walked into a poker room - and this was without knowing what the game was or who was playing."

He goes on to add that his confidence may have originated from the fact that he was a self-made poker player, whose faith in his ability was based on pure experience:

“Puggy rose to the top of his profession on his own. He was born in a shack in the hills of Tennessee. He came from a large, poor family (nine brothers and sisters). As he says, "We were so poor that we had to move every time the rent came due." He then adds, "I didn't know what shoes were until I left home."

Puggy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to work and help the family financially. He doesn't have a formal education. His education in life consisted of the "school of hard knocks". In this "school", he was a fast learner and was always at the head of the class. Don't confuse his lack of formal education with not being intelligent as Puggy is a brilliant man,” writes Sexton.
