Men and women are different in their approach to poker. Broadly speaking, women prefer to observe the psychology of each player they are at the table with and are very canny in using their observant talents to win this game.
“In general, an aggressive style is more effective at the poker table than a passive one. Aggressive style means playing your hands strongly by betting and raising. A passive style means you do more checking and calling,” writes Kathy Liebert in an article which emphasizes the benefits of observing your opponent.
Once you make the differentiation between a passive and aggressive player, you have a very powerful tool in your hands, because you can, by and large, begin to understand the kind of hands each player is holding. Liebert goes on to add that there are different styles among aggressive players.
“Some aggressive opponents play many hands and bet and raise with very weak cards… Many good poker players use a style referred to as selectively aggressive…this means that you generally play above average starting hands but play them strongly,” she says.
Another famous woman poker player who has written extensively on the subject, Debbie Burkhead, says that the outcome of poker is not based on strength, height, weight or speed. What is important is “knowledge of the game, concentration, patience, timing, money management, attitude and discipline. Her advice is to study the game, and never be intimidated:
“When you give the impression of being easily intimidated your opponents will try to take advantage of you. Once you prove you cannot be intimidated or bullied, they will back off and give you respect. I can think of no better way to gain respect in a poker game than playing the best game possible,” she says.
