Planning is Everything,
By Sean Price

Before sitting down in front of your computer to log
onto a game of online poker at your favourite site, take the time to
think about a few things that could make the difference between a winning
or losing streak.
First of all, ask yourself what type of game do you
want to play? Are you a Texas Hold ‘Em fan, or do you prefer another
type of poker altogether? Find the game that best suits your temperament
and skills, and your time online will be a lot more enjoyable.
What limits are you willing to play? That question is usually answered by
your level of skill and the state of your bankroll! Don’t get in over
your head by picking high limits and then getting disappointed…that’s
where the big boys (or girls) play and they are good! If your skills are
top notch, make sure that your bankroll will see you through the games.
Do you prefer tournaments or cash games? Tournaments
are great for improving your skills and really getting to know the
game. Many players prefer sticking to tournaments and enjoy the feeling
of competing in this way. On the other hand, cash games have less restrictions
in terms of time, and run whenever you’re ready. You can also
choose the number of players at the table in case you like short handed
games.
How much will you buy in for? Important question…whatever
the answer, stick to your budget.
How long will you play? This is a good question…bear in mind
that if you are pressed for time you won’t enjoy the game as
much and you’ll be distracted. Distraction usually leads to money
being subtracted from your bankroll, so make sure you have plenty of
time to concentrate.
What kind of player are you? Are you a recreational
player who wants a fun game and the chance to win a few bucks? Keep
that in mind when deciding how much to spend. If you are a player who
is focused on making money by playing online poker, make sure you keep
good records on the worthy opponents, and that you concentrate whilst
playing. Rule number one for serious poker players is know your game
and make sure your skills are as good as possible.
